Stuck with an Airport Layover? Here Are Some Things You Can Try Out.

Layovers are some people’s worst nightmare; just slightly better than a dentist appointment. After all, with as much as 23 hours left before your next flight, things can get pretty dull (and exhausting when we end up sitting on the same bench. Instead of throwing our hands up and resigning ourselves to hours of boredom, you might want to take a look at some of our suggestions below on how to make the most of your layover time:

Exercise

The process of sweating it out can be quite refreshing, as long as we’re not excessively tired. You don’t have to start with a full sprint around the airport, but you can bring along your yoga mat to do some light exercise or yoga positions. If you don’t have a mat handy, you can check to see if your airport has a gym and shower available for a short workout instead.

Leave the Airport and See the Sights

If you’re not too tired and you’re getting more than bored of looking at the same airport shops, you can always plan a side trip to the nearest city or town. Certain layovers offer interesting locations to explore, so do take advantage of this the next time you’re on a layover. If you don’t have as much time to get out and back, do remember to keep a close watch on the time to ensure that you don’t miss your flight.

Play a Game

When we’re sitting in a sedentary position, we tend to feel tired and drowsy, especially when our surroundings are pretty quiet. Rather than fall into an accidental nap, why not indulge in a board or card game instead? If you’re traveling solo, you can get a few rounds of solitaire going with a pack of cards. For those who have no qualms about approaching strangers in public, you can even invite them for a few rounds together instead.

Chat with a Random Person

We might not always get to travel with someone we know, so layovers can get pretty boring with no one to talk to. Instead of getting ready to nap on your bench, you can always consider approaching a random person and striking up a conversation. If you’re not particular about whom you talk to, that’s even better. Otherwise, you can always assess the current crowd to see who would be the most amenable to light chatting.

Get Some Work Done

Our brain literally zones out when it’s bored. Rather than waste our cognitive resources, we can use the layover time to catch up on our work instead. You still shouldn’t get involved in the more stressful aspects of your work, but you can definitely read and reply emails and plan your work for the following weeks if you have the time to do so.
